Southern Utah Vow Renewal | Cedar Pocket Mountain Sunset Session

If you’ve ever dreamed of renewing your vows surrounded by desert light, Joshua trees, and panoramic views ….Cedar Pocket is the spot. 🌵

This incredible location sits right on the Utah–Arizona border, tucked away on BLM land just 20 minutes from St. George. It’s one of those hidden gems that feels like your own private slice of the desert — quiet, untouched, and glowing at golden hour.

The Session

This vow renewal took place on top of a small mountain at sunset, and it couldn’t have been more beautiful. The warm desert light hit the red cliffs and Joshua trees perfectly, creating that dreamy, glowing backdrop that Southern Utah is known for.

The couple shared their vows with the wind gently moving through the grass, the sun dipping behind the hills, and the desert stretching endlessly around them. It was intimate, peaceful, and full of meaning — exactly what a vow renewal should be.

Afterward, they danced barefoot in the sand, laughed, and soaked in the last light of the evening. The hike back down as the sky turned pink and purple was the perfect ending to a perfect night.

About Cedar Pocket

Cedar Pocket is located on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, which means it’s public and accessible — ideal for couples who want a more private, natural setting for their elopement or vow renewal.

It’s about a half-mile walk to the top (so one mile round-trip), and the hike is fairly easy with incredible views the entire way. The spot is especially magical during sunset or sunrise, when the light softens and the whole landscape glows in shades of gold and red.

The area is surrounded by Joshua trees, desert brush, and wide-open skies, giving it that dreamy mix of Utah red rock and Arizona desert energy.

Where to Stay

One of the best things about this location is how close it is to some of Southern Utah’s prettiest spots! You can easily make a weekend out of it.

Stay nearby: There are tons of unique Airbnbs and desert cabins within 20–30 minutes.
🏜️ Base in St. George: You’ll be right between Snow Canyon, Lions Mouth, and other incredible places to explore.
🌅 Morning or evening: If you’re staying locally, you can easily catch sunrise or sunset without rushing.

Tips for Planning a Cedar Pocket Elopement or Vow Renewal

1. Choose Golden Hour

The light here is best at sunset or sunrise — soft, glowing, and perfect for photos. If you’re going for sunset, plan to start your short hike about an hour before golden hour to reach the top right as the light peaks.

2. Dress for the Desert

Even though the hike is easy, wear comfortable shoes for the walk up, and pack your elopement outfit to change into at the top if you prefer. The terrain is sandy with small rocks, so having good footwear makes a difference!

3. Bring Water and Snacks

It’s still the desert, and even short hikes can get warm. A couple bottles of water, a small backpack, and maybe a celebratory drink for the top make the experience even better.

4. Check BLM Guidelines

Since Cedar Pocket sits on BLM land, it’s open to the public — but always check the most recent BLM recreation guidelines for any restrictions or permits needed for photography or ceremonies.

5. Plan Your Timing

If you’re coming from St. George, give yourself 30–40 minutes to drive, park, and hike up. It’s a short, easy trip but worth planning around golden hour for that perfect light.

Why I Love This Spot

As a Southern Utah elopement photographer, I’m constantly scouting new spots for couples who want something unique — and Cedar Pocket checks all the boxes. It’s adventurous without being hard to access, stunningly beautiful, and feels completely private. You get desert views, Joshua trees, and a peaceful atmosphere without crowds.
